In truth, the layout you choose will depend on your knowledge, ability and area and cost that you have for it. The most common layout and affordable one in the UK is OO Gauge and most find this ideal for them. If you have limited space, you can go to the TT Gauge, this size you will find that Hornby has recently revamped and are becoming more available but if this is still to large then you can go to N Gauge, In the last several years this size has become more popular with more and more makers doing it but they are much smaller than OO Gauge. If you have a large space and like big locos Etc you can go for O Gauge, this is considerable larger than OO Gauge and is used inside and out, If you are looking at a garden layout then yes you should be looking at O and G Gauges but yes OO Gauge can also work outside.
If your locos are Hornby, you can visit their sight to view and download service sheet for free. With other makers and problems, it is best to contact the sellers first with photos and a clear description of the issue that you are having for them to help before you purchase the item.
Like most I did model railways with my farther, my first memories was every Christmas regardless what I had from Santa I would always look forward to him setting up the train set, Looking back now, I know it was a blue Pullman set with a big suspension bridge and a large amount of track. As I grew up it was permanently set up in the loft and I would go with my dad once a month to a very well know Bristol train shop at the bottom of North Street to pick out items. My first repair like some others was my biggest mistake, one month we bought a Flying Scotsman 4472 and one day when my dad was not home my curiosity got a hold and I wanted to know how it worked. Yes I took it apart then panicked and put it back together wrong, after a hefty telling off I ended up back in the shop telling the owner what I had done and asking if he could look at it? He did more than that, he looked at me sternly then said, “Why don’t we have a look together?” He showed me where I went wrong with the con-rods and why it was jamming up. This action kept my interest fuelled and to this day, I know that keeping calm and looking for the obvious is best when doing repairs.
